The Curation

Project year : 2017
Sector : Public

An exhibition is to be presented at an art gallery in Brazil and an interior art installation is needed. The art gallery is in a densely populated urban environment and will be reflected in the installed design to restrict openness and redirect focus on the works to be presented. The project puts the architect in a position of a curator. The gallery considered for design, the MINAS ART GALLERY, uses light and shadow as an act of reinforcing user-experience. The thick wall on the long-spanned space features a number of seamless openings inserted with aerial lights.

This project had given me greater insight to another approach of design specifically parasitic architecture; Taking existing fabrics of urbanity as the design canvas. However, this project is under informed and needs greater attention to development. The design concept looked specifically at lighting as a directive tool and observational tool. Typical interior experience of a gallery is composed of well-lit surroundings to impose direction and freedom. The concept utilises lighting to inform direction taking the existing design fabric of Minas art gallery in Brazil as the basis of curation. The design features a suspended false ceiling supported by secondary framing covered with white synthetic fabric to diffuse ceiling lighting. The opening panels also features artworks to place emphasis on the works. To highlight the existing canvas, these initial renders of the existing gallery had given me a starting point to the design. Controlling depth through variants of lighting conditions. These renders also provided a series of issues to the design that could be considered for the installation design. To enhance interior experience, Lightmaps have been rendered to test the potential of lighting conditions.
